So long 2011 - as years go, you changed me and made me better - Big Rick

"Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present."
        - Jim Rohn

Sunday, December 5, 2010, marked one year sin.ce the passing of Jim Rohn, one of America's foremost business philosophers.  Here is a sampling of his philosophy on life and business:

Skills: Don't wish it were easier; wish you were better. Don't wish for less problems; wish for more skills. Don't wish for less challenges; wish for more wisdom.

Growth: Don't join an easy crowd. You won't grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform and achieve are high.

Change: We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.

Activity: The few who do are the envy of the many who watch.

Success: Success is what you attract by the person you become.

Verizon allows Motorola XYBoardMZ609 camera to get swiped

I am unable to use my XYBoard camera device with an  application that uses an industry standard CAM IP device address. I need to uninstall the Google Talk app that was pre-loaded by Verizon on ROM but need to root the device to be able to move the Google Talk app from the SD Rom into the trash.

Google Talk and Video apps steals the camera away from standard USB settings and other CAM apps render "device not found" because the device name was changed by Google. As an open source expert, I find Google's programming practice appalling. Please join me to insist that they and Verizon not swipe the camera in this manner. I have registered complaints with Google, Motorola, and Verizon.

When I find the correct Update.zip file to properly root my tablet I will share it.

Happy Holidays and a prosperous 2012 New Year!

Digium® Positioned in Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications

Digium® Positioned in Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications

Digium/Asterisk* is the backbone application core for Amernet's hosted PBX.

Why "Visionary" in the Gartner Magic Quadrant? Because of the unique price performance point available for Small to Medium Business (SMB).

Amernet offers various basic packages for SMB markets. Prices start at
$49/mo (2-line Hosted PBX plus 1,000 free North American anytime minutes per month)
$99/mo (5-line Hosted PBX plus 2,000 free North American anytime minutes per month)
$189/mo (10-line Hosted PBX plus 3,000 free North American anytime minutes per month)

Check these "packages" out at https://www.amer.net/portal/cart.php to use with your existing Broadband provider. Alternately, Amernet can deliver the best connectivity in the business when your current ISP contract comes up for renewal as well.

Critical Massholes

Last week a 68 year old woman from out of town was walking rightfully in a crosswalk in San Francisco at Embarcadero and Mission 8:30 am and mowed down by a cyclist who blew the traffic signal. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2011/08/11/pedestrian-hit-by-bicyclist-in-san-francisco-dies/

This is manslaughter plain and simple and the person should be charged accordingly. What's to contemplate? re: http://www.kron.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=1720

I have sympathize with "Critical Mass" advocates who increasingly and at times rudely impose their platform upon traffic flow to raise driver awareness that in our "green" society, autos should share the road with cyclists. I generally support this platform by peaceful means (re: Dr. Martin Luther King) versus by ANY means (re: Malcolm X).

What is disturbing is the number of "Critical Massholes" who do NOT obey traffic signals and have lost their way as responsible vehicle operators. This applies to skateboarders as well in my book. When the light turns red, vehicle operators MUST stop. I see far too many cyclists who continue to blow traffic lights and endangering pedestrians every day.

We need to measure and learn from this tragic and absolutely innocent death.

Solution for the Nation's debt drama...

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes I've heard in all this drama about the debt ceiling:

"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election."
...
"If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin." - Samuel Adams, 1780

"Apple cloud vs. Google cloud..." - where is the center of the universe?

from Jason Hiner (TechRepublic) blog post:

FINAL ANALYSIS - "For Google, the Web is the center of the universe. For Apple, your device is the center of the universe". To read Jason's blog - click here

Big Rick thinks that it’s going to take more than only taking a salary of $1 per year for Steve Jobs to perpetuate a proprietary widget crusade. Apple should try to get along better with the Oracle, Adobe, and open source folks if they want to avoid acquisition. Apple must also avoid marketing alliances (like the AT&T fiasco) that make the world "jailbreak" their all-sacred devices to work on other platforms.

At the other end of the spectrum, Google offers free stuff (Storage, Apps, Voice, etc.) in their bid to "own the web". Their benevolent market-share strategy has allowed them to kick Microsoft's Bing-butt in the US. However, Google's developers need to learn to better respect device/industry standards. Case in point, when Google steals your Mac iSight camera device name from their Video/Voice Apps, other apps cannot find the camera.

Google is betting that marketers will continue to fund their growth via advertising despite global market struggles. Apple is betting that brand loyalty and innovation will create demand for premium-priced devices. Both are strategies depend on the global (web) economy continuing its boon.

Interesting Numbers to remember:
Google employees 24,400 - hiring 6,200 more in 2011
Apple employees 46,600 - Apple staff raking in the cash - $419,528 profit per head

From Royal Pingdom link re: Apple employees data above
A couple of other observations:
  • Yahoo has exactly the same number of employees now as in 2008.
  • Microsoft has actually shrunk its operation by 2,000 employees.
  • It’s not so strange that HP’s and IBM’s profit per employee isn’t that high. There must be significant overhead running such large operations.
Big Rick's concludes that all this "center of the universe tech talk" is best summed up by Harry Truman:
"It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose your own."

Digium CEO post - "Microsoft + Skype = Microsoft"

For those depending on FREE Video, Web and Audio conferencing services, the list of options continues to dwindle.

Earlier this year Salesforce.com gobbled up dimdim and set expectations for thousands of users to not plan to use the FREE service any more outside the Salesforce.com Chatter Suite. No more new customers are being accepted of any kind.

A similar strategy seems to be underway at Microsoft with acquisition of Skype $8.5 Billion. Digium CEO, Danny Windham offers another anti-Microsoft view, (Open Source  hosted PBX software - Asterisk sponsor)....... Microsoft + Skype = Microsoft.

See more anti-Microsoft sentiment also today at: Skype to Kill Asterisk VoIP Integration.

Interoperability continues to be a challenge in the wake of giant firms acquiring SMB cost-competitive platforms to promote their mega-suites over open systems technology.

Guide to Tipping:

Tipping can be confusing: for instance, children are not expected to tip their parents, but parents are expected to tip their children (it’s called an "allowance").

Here's a guide to proper tipping:

  • Waiters should be tipped 20% of your meal's cost or left 20% of your meal.
  • At fancy hotels, bellhops must be allowed to take an item of their choice from any of your bags.
  • In addition to getting a free mansion, mayors must be tipped a dollar amount equivalent to everyone in town's phone number added up and multiplied by two.
  • Tip your wedding DJ the surprise of a lifetime—it was his wedding all along!
  • Your hairstylist's tip should be $5 more than the price of the cut, plus all your loose hair woven into a baby blanket.
  • Your stuntman should be tipped over a railing! And then tipped the height of the railing in dollars.
  • Not technically a tip, but you owe your postman 10% of any money that he delivers.
  • Doctors should be tipped all the cans of pumpkin-pie filling you can spare.
  • A wife who sells her beautiful hair to buy you a pocket-watch chain should be tipped one ironic comb and one copy of O. Henry's short stories to make sure this never happens again.
  • Tip yourself a whole day of relaxation—you deserve it. Also, keep any money you might normally give to charity.

Business video futures - all the right reasons......

According Cisco's Visual Index study, video will account for nearly 90 percent of all consumer Internet traffic by 2013, and 60 percent of all online video will be consumer video, up from 32 percent in 2009.

Get the .pdf summery: Cisco Business Video Trends Executive Summary.pdf

Personally, I prefer Amernet Unified Communications, but Cisco is dead-on accurate regarding Hosting Service and Video Conferencing (i.e. www.FLEXMEET.com) provider futures as a vital part of unified communications going forward.

"A picture is worth 1,000 words"

Here are a few take-aways from a recent Social Media CEO Bootcamp in San Francisco about the market current state.........
- Twitter is like an old Telegram
- Facebook is like a Yearbook on steroids
- LinkedIn is the new Corporate Rolodex
- YouTube and GoogleTV (IPTV) is like the new television
- Your personal blog reads as your own newspaper
- Wikipedia is like the new online knowledge base
- Google, Bing, and Yahoo! comprise the new Yellow Pages

Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) merges Telephony, Computing and Apps providers into six distinct areas according to Gartner's Marketscope for UC (April 9, 2010). These include Voice and Telephony, Messaging (Email), Conferencing, Rich Media Presence, Unified Clients operating from a single (mobile) interface, and specific Communications-enabled Business Processes (CEBP)s. My firm, Amernet, has recently added CRM, Content/Document Management, IPTV, and Mobile Computing to our traditional telephony and managed services subscription suite.

We rarely answer the phone today unless the caller belongs to our "inner circle".  Since email gets too cluttered with unwanted content, I browse email interests through my smart phone. Soon we'll likely all opt out of plowing through text (emails, blogs, etc.) in favor of getting content from Video.  As phones get faster moving video streams, email will go the way of snail mail. Arguably, You Tube is arguably, the #2 search engine marketing (SEM) firm today because people today prefer video to searching through mountains of text.

Truly, the adage that "a picture is worth 1,000 words" is true. re: http://bit.ly/i8lDWO
